CPSC: No radiation risk in Chinese drywall – Birmingham Business Journal

Testing conducted by federal and state labs found no radiation safety risk to families living in homes built with drywall manufactured in China, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Monday.

The Los Angeles Times ran an investigative story in July, revealing that phosphogypsum, a radioactive byproduct of phosphate fertilizer production, is commonly used in some Chinese-made drywall.

On the outside, they are new and sunny looking. On the inside, they are strange-smelling and rotting. These are the thousands of new houses built in the United States within the past few years that owners allege may contain yet another problem export from China: bad drywall.

Since 2006, new home owners in 23 states have been suffering from what they say are odorous batches of corrosive drywall that were imported from at least one gypsum mine in China and used by U.S home builders.

A bankruptcy judge has approved a plan of reorganization for South Florida home builder WCI Communities Inc. that includes the establishment of a Chinese Drywall Trust to help owners in developments such as the Parkland Golf & Country Club pursue claims over the tainted drywall used in their homes.

WCI Communities Inc. is expected to emerge from bankruptcy protection today, and the builder will set up a trust to cover administrative costs associated with Chinese drywall issues.

Until now, WCI homeowners had been precluded by the company’s bankruptcy from obtaining any relief.

WCI plan sets up drywall trust – Bradenton Herald

MANATEE — A federal judge Wednesday confirmed WCI Communities Inc.’s reorganization plan, which includes a trust fund to help homeowners with tainted Chinese drywall in their homes, court records show.

The plan, which U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Carey confirmed during a hearing in Delaware, calls for WCI to establish the trust with $900,000 in seed money and give it a small ownership stake in the reorganized company.

Drywall replaced, homeowners return – WAVY News 10

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Some homeowners in the Hampshire of Greenbrier subdivision of Chesapeake are returning home as the developer removes and replaces the suspected chinese drywall originally installed in their dwellings.

The Dragas Company is replacing the dryall in at least 70 homes at Hampshire of Greenbrier. The company is doing the same at homes in the Cromwell Park section of Virginia Beach.

Imported Chinese drywall is causing health problems for occupants of homes in two Las Vegas neighborhoods, lawyers charge in a lawsuit filed Thursday. But the builder says Chinese drywall wasn’t used in homes named in the lawsuit.

Attorneys who handle construction defect lawsuits filed suit in Clark County District Court in Las Vegas against subsidiaries of Miami-based homebuilder Lennar Corp. and drywall manufacturer Georgia-Pacific Corp. of Atlanta.

The suit, seeking class-action status for all Nevadans suffering health problems because of imported Chinese drywall, was filed by the law firm Fuller Jenkins on behalf of owners of four homes.

CAPE CORAL: Southwest Florida homeowners whose houses are filled with Chinese drywall are helping one lawmaker better understand the problem.

Senator Dave Aronberg met with a group of homeowners in Cape Coral on Saturday.

The meeting took place in a home infested with Chinese drywall. Senator Aronberg looked at photos of corroded pipes and cords.

Homeowners blame the damage as well as a variety of health issues on the drywall.
