WASHINGTON — A U.S. Senate subcommitee has scheduled a long-awaited hearing on the issue of tainted Chinese drywall.

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation’s Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance has scheduled the hearing for 10:30 a.m. on May 21.

The defective imported wallboard has been found in hundreds of homes throughout Florida – including Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast – and other states. It has been linked to sulfuric odors thought to corrode metal components in homes and blamed by homeowners for health problems.

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., who has been vocal about the tainted drywall issue, had been pushing for the hearing for several weeks. He is a member of the subcommittee.
